The NHS Retirement Fellowship (NHSRF) was founded in 1978 by Irene James OBE as a self-help organization, catering specifically for retired NHS staff.  Former employees of NHS Trusts, Authorities, Practices and the NHS Executive, over the age of 50 together with their partners are eligible to join.  It maintains health, welfare and counseling support for its members, as well as being a pro-active social organization.  Throughout the network of approximately 175 branches across the UK, over 17,000 healthcare retirees are given encouragement and support to enjoy a wide variety of activities.

All Branches are linked through Regional/Country Committees to the National Executive Committee, which meets three times per year and is headed by the National Director, Mike Brown, and consists of a Regional or Country Representative from each of the Regional/Country Committees.

The National Fellowship AGM and Conference is held in June/July and since 1997 has been combined with a Fellowship Holiday, where the Members and their partners have taken over a National Holiday Village or Hotel, usually with sole occupancy, either from Monday to Friday or a long weekend.  The Conference and AGM being traditionally held on the Wednesday or Saturday as appropriate.
